Preparing for Your First Wedding Stationery Meeting

The wedding invitation can be very sentimental for many couples - seeing everything come together on paper and shipped to loved ones’ mailboxes makes it feel very real! The countdown to the most beautiful day of your lives is on.

Before you schedule your very first meeting with your wedding stationery designer, we’re sharing the tips you need to prepare in advance to get all of your questions answered.

Plan Ahead

Consider your timeline as your wedding day approaches. Invitations should be sent out 8-10 weeks before your wedding. Start the design process six months before your wedding. Since we are living in extraordinary circumstances, don’t be afraid to ask your wedding stationery designer for recommendations about what to do if the date of your wedding is changed; it’s great to have a backup plan, just in case!

Save Some Inspiration

Take advantage of this uninterrupted time at home to find some invitation style and inspiration! Scroll through Pinterest and Instagram and save photos of invites that you love. It can be helpful to show your designer what elements you like best at your first meeting so they can create something unique for you based off of your tastes. Take note of sizing, colors, fonts, wording and textures - keep in mind your wedding theme!

Consider Postage Costs

Set a wedding stationery budget together. That includes postage! A standard piece of mail will typically be for a weight up to 1 ounce, which would require one postage stamp. However, many full wedding invitation suites may require postage for possibly 2 ounces. For larger, thicker or square invitations, there will be additional postage costs on top of that.

Think of your postage costs for all of your wedding stationery needs. You will need to budget postage costs for your save-the-dates, wedding invitation suite and stamped reply cards, if you choose to include them. It’s important to discuss as a couple what part of stationery is most special to you; together as a team, you can decide how to best budget for postage.

Solidify the Guest List

Get your guest list as settled as you can - and try your best to come up with the guest list count you need for your invitations. Remember, your guest list should include those you sent save-the-dates to, plus any additional guests you have added to your list after sending save-the-dates. Couples living in the same household should get one invitation for both; single adults living in the same household get separate invitations. Children can be added to their parent/guardians’ addressed invitations.

Write Down Questions

Think of any and all questions you may have for your stationery designer - and ask away! Any stationery designer is just as excited for your big day as you, and they will do everything they can to ease uncertainty in the best of their ability during this unusual time.

Some topics you may have questions on are budgeting, timelines, samples, proof approvals, additional day-of stationery needs (like welcome signs, menus), etc.
