Art Paper Scissors is lucky to work with incredible vendors and create the most amazing experience for our couples. One such vendor is Idalia Photography, an awesome husband-and-wife photography team that captures the magic of weddings so beautifully. This duo works tirelessly behind the camera to photograph the love, the excitement and the (happy) tears on a couple’s big day!
We’ve done a Q&A with Jay and Alex, owners of Idalia Photography, to learn a little bit about what a day in life of a wedding photography team is like, and how they bring love stories to life.
Q1: We’ll start with a little bit about you guys. How did you two fall in love?
We met thanks to two friends but the first three times we met, we pretty much ignored each other. Having completely disregarded each other, we had even forgotten that we had met before. Eventually, we agreed to a double date and it finally clicked between us! We connected over our love of travel and it was on our first few trips together when we knew we had found the one.
How did Idalia Photography come to life?
Alex started the business as a children and family photographer and Jay joined the business when wedding photography became our main focus. We’ve been capturing weddings together since 2011 and we have loved every minute of our journey!
Describe your photography style and aesthetic.
We strive to create romantic, timeless, and classic images for our couples in a light and airy style while still preserving beautiful natural colors. Our photography style combines fun, candid shots to capture emotions of the day with traditional, posed shots to commemorate in albums and frames.
How do you work hand-in-hand with the couple leading up to their big day and the day of the wedding?
During the months leading up to their wedding, we help our couples create a custom timeline that will allow them to enjoy their wedding day stress-free. We also include an engagement session in each and every collection we offer so that couples can get used to our approach to posing and feel 100% comfortable on the wedding day.
How do you incorporate a couple’s love story into your photographs?
We incorporate our couples’ love stories into their photographs as soon as they book when we help them choose a location for their engagement session. We always recommend choosing a place that is special to them as a couple so that their images are meaningful and serve as a reminder of this chapter in their lives. On the wedding day, we incorporate all the special details of the day from heirloom jewelry to the tangible items they’ve spent months selecting such as their invitation suite, florals, center pieces, cake topper, etc. while capturing all the special moments from getting ready to the fun at the reception. Years from now, when the memories start to fade, we want our images to serve as a reminder of each and every detail of our couples’ wedding days.
What is your favorite moment to capture on a wedding day?
If we had to pick one, it would have to be the moment when a groom sees his bride for the first time on their wedding day. Whether it’s down the aisle, or during a first look, it’s always the most anticipated and emotional moment of the day.
We noticed you two are big travelers. Where is the most interesting location you have ever shot for a wedding?
We absolutely love to travel, especially internationally, and we dream of shooting a dream destination wedding abroad someday. So far, we’ve had the opportunity to capture weddings in several states but one of our very favorites was earlier this year when we travelled to Castle Hill Resort in the Green Mountains of Ludlow, Vermont. It was a fairytale location for one of the most romantic weddings we’ve had the opportunity to capture.
What gives you the most enjoyment working in photography for some of life’s biggest moments?
We love getting to know our couples and getting insight into their relationships with their loved ones because we find that the more we know about our couples and what’s important to them, the better we can look for and capture the moments that they’ll want to remember when they think back to their wedding day.
What advice would you offer to newly engaged couples looking to begin the planning process of finding a wedding photographer?
We recommend getting to know potential photographers through their website, but especially through their blog and social media. Wedding photographers are the vendors that couples spend the most time with on their wedding day, so it’s really important for a couple to connect with their photographers. We also advise couples to ask to see full galleries of weddings similar to the one they are planning so that they can get a sense of the consistency in the photographer’s work.
And finally, any love and marriage advice to offer to our brides and grooms?
Learn to communicate well. Sharing thoughts, opinions, feelings, and ideas openly and without reservation is key to having a joy-filled marriage that is free of conflict…especially if you work together!
